Hospital Seeks Toys for Pediatric Patients, Ensures Holiday Gifts
On Dec. 10, HSHS St. John's Children's Hospital in Springfield asked the public to donate toys for its Santa's Workshop, a Christmas gift store that provides free presents to families with children spending the holidays in the hospital. The regional program serves pediatric patients from across the area including Morgan County, and donations can be mailed or dropped off through Dec. 17.

HSHS St. John's Children's Hospital in Springfield launched an appeal on Dec. 10 to stock its Santa's Workshop, a Christmas gift store that lets parents of hospitalized children pick out gifts at no charge. The program serves pediatric patients from across the region, including families who live in Morgan County, and aims to ease the burden of holiday shopping for parents whose children cannot leave the hospital.
Organizers say volunteers will be available to wrap donated toys, making it easier for parents to provide a ready present for their child. The hospital has compiled an Amazon wish list of preferred items to guide donors. Those who prefer to buy in person can choose commonly requested items such as coloring supplies, Barbie dolls, Lego kits and race cars among other toys.
Donations can be mailed to the hospital, attention to Abigail Salzeider, or dropped off unwrapped at the hospital main lobby. The deadline to donate toys is Dec. 17, giving residents a limited window to contribute before the holiday. Local residents who wish to support families from Morgan County and the wider region can drop off items during regular visiting hours at the main lobby or arrange shipment to the hospital address with the attention line provided.

The Santa's Workshop offers practical relief for families facing long hospital stays during a time of year when stress and expenses often increase. By providing a place for parents to choose gifts at no charge, the program helps preserve holiday traditions for children receiving care and reduces one source of financial strain for their families. Volunteers who wrap gifts also add a personal touch that can make a hospital room feel more like home for a child on Christmas.
With only days until the donation deadline, area residents who want to contribute should plan to purchase and send toys promptly. The hospital continues to accept a range of items that reflect the needs and preferences of pediatric patients, and community donations will determine how many families can be served this holiday season.
