Jacksonville Main Street concert series opens with Almost Elton John

Almost Elton John turned Central Park Plaza into a summer gathering place on May 29, pulling residents into downtown Jacksonville for the opening night of the Jacksonville Main Street Downtown Concert Series. The weather was described as perfect, and the turnout showed how a free concert can do more than fill an evening with music. It can bring people onto the square, keep them there, and send them toward nearby restaurants, shops and later-night stops downtown.

The eight-week series is free, family-friendly and pet-friendly, with concerts and food and drink service running from 6 to 9 p.m. each Friday through July 31. Jacksonville Main Street also has organized an official after-concert party at a different downtown business each week, extending the night beyond the bandstand and giving another local spot a reason to capture the crowd. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and settle in for an evening in Central Park Plaza.

That setup matters in a city center that depends on foot traffic. Jacksonville tourism materials promote the concerts as a reason to visit downtown Jacksonville, support local shops, restaurants and food trucks, and spend time in Central Park. Jacksonville Main Street says the series features musical genres and artists from across the country, which helps make the event feel less like a one-night show and more like a recurring civic habit.

The opening concert’s draw also fit a longer pattern in Jacksonville. Jacksonville Main Street was founded in 1998 to revitalize downtown, and state tourism materials say its work centers on historic preservation, economic development and community engagement. The city hosted the Levitt AMP Jacksonville Music Series in Central Park in 2016 and 2017, including a 2016 run that brought 10 free family-friendly concerts downtown and came with $25,000 in matching funds.

The 2026 concert calendar places the Downtown Concert Series alongside other downtown fixtures such as the Downtown Plaza car show, the Miss Jacksonville pageant and the Pumpkin Festival. For downtown Jacksonville, that mix is the point: repeated events, familiar names and a steady reason for people to return to the square. The next concert listed HuDost, an electric folk band, for Friday, June 5 from 6 to 9 p.m., keeping the summer rhythm moving week after week.
