A patient’s final comfort care, and the memory of it weeks later, turned into the kind of recognition that says more about bedside nursing than any plaque ever could. Jacksonville Memorial Hospital named Kayla Knox, a registered nurse in the inpatient intensive care unit, as its April Colleague of the Month on April 30 after a spouse said the family’s last hospitalization there was the best hospital experience they had ever had.

Knox has worked at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital since 2012, giving Morgan County families a familiar name in one of the hospital’s most vulnerable care settings. In the nomination, the spouse described how Knox did more than manage the clinical demands of intensive care. She talked with the patient about her two huskies, helping keep him engaged and smiling during a difficult stay. When he was moved to comfort care, Knox placed two small stuffed dogs in his arms.

Weeks later, the spouse found those stuffed dogs inside the box containing the patient’s ashes. The family immediately recognized who had given them. For a grieving spouse, that detail made the difference between a routine discharge process and a lasting sign that the patient had been seen as a person, not just a chart.

Memorial Health’s Colleague of the Month program includes a surprise celebration reception, a special presentation and recognition from a member of executive leadership. Nominations can come from patients, family members or colleagues, which puts patient experience at the center of the award rather than behind-the-scenes staff praise. Memorial Health says its mission is to improve lives and build stronger communities through better health, with values centered on Safety, Integrity, Quality and Stewardship.

The recognition also lands in a hospital that serves a wide swath of west-central Illinois. Jacksonville Memorial Hospital is a critical access hospital serving Morgan, Cass, Scott, Greene and Brown counties, and Memorial Health says the hospital has earned four consecutive Magnet designations from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The system says only about 2% of hospitals in the country have reached that mark.

As part of Memorial Health, Jacksonville Memorial Hospital provides emergency services 24 hours a day and has an intensive care unit, where the stakes are highest and the smallest gestures can carry the most weight. Knox’s recognition reflects that reality for local families: in a place where illness, fear and loss often collide, compassion can become a lasting part of the care itself.
