A Rahway police officer, his nurse wife, their 10-month-old daughter and the family dog made it out of a Howell Township house fire with their lives. The home on Dutch Valley Road was destroyed, and the family lost all of their belongings.

Howell Township police said officers were sent to the home at about 1:53 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 2026, after a report of a structure fire. When they arrived, they saw heavy black smoke and flames coming from the rear of the house. All occupants and pets had already evacuated, and no injuries were reported among the family, police, firefighters or EMS crews.

The blaze drew a large response from across the area, including Southard Fire Department, Freewood Acres Fire Company, Squankum Fire Company, Ramtown Fire Company, Jackson Township Fire Department, Lakewood Fire Department and South Wall Fire Company. Howell police EMS, Howell First Aid, the Howell Township Fire Bureau, the Monmouth County Fire Marshal, New Jersey Natural Gas and the American Red Cross also assisted at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by local and county officials.

Relief efforts moved quickly after the fire. Rahway PBA Local 31 launched a GoFundMe campaign to help the family cover temporary housing, essentials and rebuilding costs. Within about 24 hours, the fundraiser had raised more than $60,000, a sign of how quickly the story of the family’s loss spread through Rahway and beyond.

The support reflects the scale of the damage. The officer, his wife and their young daughter escaped the fire, but they were left without a home, without their belongings and without the everyday items needed for a baby. In a fast-moving fire, those minutes mattered. Everyone got out before responders arrived, but the house was lost, a reminder of how little time families may have once flames are visible and smoke starts pushing through a home.
