Diane Sauter announced she was ending her campaign for Nye County sheriff after a medical scare, saying the health concern and family conversations led her to step away from the race. Sauter thanked residents who supported her campaign through Facebook, emails and local meet and greets, and said she did not make the decision lightly.

“I want to thank everybody who was supporting me through Facebook, through emails, coming to my meet and greets,” Sauter said. “I feel like I’m letting people down, but I did have a medical scare and I have to follow through with it and make sure that I’m going to live my best life right now.” Sauter later added that she and her husband agreed she should withdraw to focus on recovery and quality of life. “My health is more important. My husband and I talked and we decided that I was going to step back from running for sheriff. I’m going to enjoy my life,” Sauter said.

Sauter first sought the sheriff’s office in 2022, when she ran to unseat then-incumbent Sheriff Sharon Wehrly. Sauter was eliminated in that cycle when now-incumbent Sheriff Joe McGill won the primary and went on to challenge Wehrly in the general election. McGill has already announced he will be seeking reelection as sheriff in the coming cycle.

Sauter’s withdrawal reduces the number of declared or potential challengers to the incumbent and changes dynamics for voters across Nye County, particularly in Pahrump where Sauter held visible campaign events. For residents who had engaged with Sauter’s campaign, the decision means supporters will need to reassess options and priorities ahead of candidate filing deadlines and upcoming forums.

The sheriff’s office is a high-profile elected post in Nye County, responsible for patrol, detention, search and rescue and community policing in a county that covers large rural areas and multiple population centers. Changes in the slate of candidates can affect debates over resource allocation, staffing in the jail and patrol divisions, and policy priorities such as public safety funding and community outreach.

Local civic groups and neighborhood associations that hosted Sauter’s meet and greets will now face a narrower field for town halls and candidate nights. Voters who followed Sauter on social media or engaged by email will likely see campaign activity shift toward incumbent messaging and any remaining challengers.

Sauter’s decision underscores how personal health can intersect with public service ambitions and reshape local races. With Joe McGill seeking reelection, the next steps for voters are to monitor official candidate filings, attend scheduled candidate forums and evaluate how remaining contenders propose to address law enforcement and public safety across Nye County.
