Wind Advisory Warns Tonopah Residents of Gusty Conditions Saturday
Gusts up to 50 mph are hitting Tonopah today from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with blowing dust that could drop visibility to under a mile.

West winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts reaching 50 mph are sweeping through Tonopah and Northwestern Nye County today, with the Wind Advisory running from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. PDT. Despite mostly sunny skies and temperatures climbing near 70°F, the National Weather Service office in Elko issued an urgent weather message confirming the advisory remains in effect through the evening hours.
The primary hazard beyond the gusts themselves is blowing dust. The National Weather Service warns that dust may temporarily reduce visibility to one mile or less in spots across the affected area, which stretches across White Pine, Northern and Southern Lander, Northern and Southern Eureka, Southwest Elko, Humboldt, and Northwestern Nye counties. Tonopah is explicitly named among the affected communities, alongside dozens of other Nevada towns including Battle Mountain, Round Mountain, Manhattan, Ely, and Eureka.
Unsecured outdoor objects are at risk of being blown around, tree limbs could come down, and a few power outages are possible. Drivers should exercise particular caution: winds of this strength can make handling difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles such as RVs, trailers, and box trucks traveling U.S. 95 or other open stretches through the region. Nye County has urged residents to secure outdoor objects and prepare for potential impacts.

Travelers heading south toward California should note that a separate Wind Advisory is in effect for the Mojave Desert Slopes, issued by the National Weather Service office in Hanford. That advisory, covering the area around Mojave, runs from 8 a.m. Saturday through 5 a.m. Sunday, with northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 45 mph. The two advisories are distinct, covering different regions under different forecast offices, but together they signal a broad wind event affecting much of the corridor between central Nevada and Southern California on Saturday.
