Barn Fire on 355th Avenue in Dent Draws Multiple Department Response
A hay loft fire on 355th Ave. in Dent pulled three departments to a single barn Monday and spared every animal on the property.

A barn on the 39000 block of 355th Avenue in Dent caught fire in its upper hay loft Monday, drawing crews from three departments and leaving investigators with a blaze officials believe is non-suspicious but have not yet fully explained.
The fire was reported at 6:46 p.m. March 30, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office. Investigators believe it started in the upper hay loft and caused moderate damage to the structure before crews brought it under control. No humans or animals were injured.
Dent, Perham and Vergas fire departments all responded. That three-department turnout to a single barn call reflects how mutual aid is built into rural fire response across the county: when a structure fire is dispatched, neighboring departments roll automatically. Perham Fire Chief Matt Johnson, whose department was among those that answered, has described the arrangement as essential. "Without mutual aid it would've been a lot more challenging to contain the fire," Johnson has said. "I hope people understand how important mutual aid is and how lucky we are to have such good working relationships with those other departments."
The dependency is geographic. Rural barns sit far from pressurized water mains, and a hay loft fire moves fast through dry stored material before any crew can cover the county roads between stations and scene.

The cause remains under investigation. The Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office can be reached at 218-998-8555.
The Firewise Minnesota program, which works with rural communities across the state, lists clearly posted address signage and unobstructed access roads among the most effective steps rural landowners can take to shorten response times before the next call goes out.
