Elderly Ashby Resident Reported Missing, Found Safe in North Dakota
An Ashby elderly resident reported missing Tuesday evening was found safe in North Dakota after location data traced them 200+ miles from their expected route.

An elderly Ashby resident who left home in a vehicle Tuesday evening and was feared to be in medical distress was located safe and unharmed in Richland County, North Dakota, after a multi-agency search that crossed state lines.
Grant County deputies received the missing-person report just before 7 p.m. Tuesday. The person had left their Ashby home in a vehicle and was initially believed to be headed toward Otter Tail County, prompting the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department to assist in the search. Authorities also expressed concern that the person may have been experiencing a medical or mental health crisis.
The search shifted dramatically when the Grant County Sheriff's Office used location data to narrow the person's position to Richland County, North Dakota, well beyond the originally suspected destination. That information was relayed to the Richland County Sheriff's Office, which located the person and confirmed they were safe and unharmed. The person was later reunited with family members.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office coordinated assistance from several area agencies, including Fergus Falls Police and the Ashby Fire Department, in addition to the Otter Tail and Richland County sheriff's offices.
The incident underscores how location data has become a critical tool in missing-person cases, allowing investigators to redirect resources across county and state lines before a situation escalates. The specific source of the location data, whether a cell phone, vehicle GPS, or another system, was not disclosed by authorities.
