New York Mills Cultural Center Launches $2.3 Million Campaign to Preserve Historic Arts Hub
A $500K anchor gift from Farmers & Merchants State Bank has pushed the NY Mills Cultural Center to 60% of its $2.3M preservation goal, with $920K still to close.

The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center has raised roughly $1.4 million toward its $2.3 million "Cultivating Community Capital Campaign," clearing 60% of its target before the campaign's public phase has even formally launched. The approximately $920,000 still needed stands between the center and a fall construction window that, if missed, delays the full project by at least a year.
Executive Director Betsy Roder will host a kick-off open house on April 17 from 4 to 6 p.m., where attendees can review plans, hear from leadership, and learn how to contribute. Four days later, on April 21, Phase I construction resumes on one of downtown New York Mills' oldest structures: a building that has stood since 1885 and has housed the regional arts center since 1992.
The campaign's momentum built during a quiet phase beginning in July 2025, anchored by a $500,000 commitment from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines and Farmers & Merchants State Bank. That gift was large enough to push the effort past its commissioning threshold and into a full public launch. Regional funders have since brought the total to approximately 60% of goal.
Phase I addresses the most urgent physical needs: window replacement, entry stoop repairs, and continued façade work following earlier tuckpointing already completed. The full campaign also covers energy-efficiency upgrades and accessibility improvements throughout the building. A future Phase II would add programming space, formalize artist residency capacity, and improve audience amenities in a facility that currently hosts classes, performances, gallery exhibitions, and community events drawing visitors into the downtown.
Roder has described the campaign as an investment in preserving rural creativity and connection. The center has been explicit: fundraising must be complete by summer for construction to proceed this fall, and most programming will continue during Phase I work, though visitors should expect temporary access adjustments beginning April 21.
