Otters sweep Detroit Lakes with balanced bats, strong pitching at opener
Fergus Falls opened Legion Field by beating Detroit Lakes 12-2 and 11-1, with the bottom of the order and two pitchers setting the tone.

Fergus Falls left Legion Field with exactly the kind of start that can shape a spring: a sweep, a confident home-opening crowd and two lopsided wins to open Central Lakes Conference and Section 8AAA play. The Otters beat Detroit Lakes 12-2 and 11-1 in Tuesday night’s doubleheader at DeLagoon Park, a twinbill scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. that marked the team’s return home after road games at Platte Valley, Skutt Catholic and Minnewaska.
Game 1 turned early on a sequence that showed how deep Fergus Falls can be. Nolan Felstul was hit by a pitch, Micah Johnson reached on an error and Hunter Powers drew a walk before Parker Thielke lined a two-run single with one out to give the Otters control. The bottom of the order helped keep the pressure on, with Cam Wiederich, Benett Thielke and Jacob Fronning combining for five of Fergus Falls’ nine hits. The Otters also drew six walks and did not strike out once in the opener, a sign of a disciplined approach rather than a lineup waiting for one big swing.
Powers carried that cushion on the mound. He worked five innings, allowed two runs on two hits, struck out seven and walked one, giving Fergus Falls a steady first-game performance to match its balanced offense.
Game 2 was even more one-sided. Felstul opened with a walk, and RBI singles from Micah Johnson and Parker Thielke quickly put Detroit Lakes on the defensive again. Felstul and Brody Krein each had two hits in the second game, while Josh Horgen earned his first varsity win by pitching five innings and allowing only one unearned run.
Afterward, Shane Thielke pointed to the pieces that made the sweep work: two pitchers who pounded the zone, a defense that backed them up and an offense that put the ball in play. He also noted that the group still has work to do, which matters in a conference where every series can matter later. Detroit Lakes joined the Central Lakes Conference in the 2024-25 school year, while Fergus Falls has been part of the league since 2005-06.
For a team making its first home stand after a road-heavy start, the sweep offered a clear early identity: strike the zone, play clean defense and spread the offense through the lineup.
