Perham Youth Cheer Program Builds Confidence, Strengthens Community Spirit
The Just For Kix Perham cheer team has grown into a steady presence at local games and events, offering 4th through 7th grade athletes performance experience, skill training, and community connection. The program matters to residents because it expands youth recreation options, supports mental and physical wellbeing, and highlights the role of schools and families in keeping opportunities affordable and accessible.
A youth cheer program in Perham is drawing attention for more than its routines. The Just For Kix Perham squad offers young athletes a place to learn stunting, cheers and performance skills while building teamwork and self confidence, and by early 2024 the group was cheering regularly and attending roughly one activity each week.
The team is open to 4th to 12th graders, but the current roster is made up largely of 4th through 7th grade athletes. Coaches and program leaders focus on skill development and group cohesion, and they have intentionally scheduled appearances at school events and community gatherings to give students stage experience and to strengthen ties between families and local institutions. Support from school staff including Prairie Wind Middle School principal Jim Kennedy has helped the program become a familiar presence at sporting events.
For Perham families the program fills a practical need for structured, supervised physical activity outside of school hours. Regular participation in organized sports is associated with improved cardiovascular fitness, coordination and mental health for children. Equally important, parents and community volunteers contribute time and resources that keep the program running, underscoring how grassroots efforts can expand recreational offerings in smaller communities.

The team also raises questions about equity and access. While local support has helped this squad thrive, disparities remain for families who cannot afford fees, lack transportation or cannot commit to volunteer requirements. As Perham and Otter Tail County consider investments in youth services, programs like Just For Kix illustrate both the benefits of community partnerships and the limits of volunteer reliant models.
Looking ahead, sustaining and expanding opportunities will require coordinated action from schools, local government and nonprofit partners. Increasing funding for recreation, ensuring low cost registration options and improving transportation to practices and events would help more children access the physical and social benefits that the Perham cheer team is providing. For now the squad offers a visible example of how focused programming can boost confidence, encourage healthy activity and bring community members together at local games and events.
