Vergas Maple Fest draws 650 with pancakes, contests, community fun
About 650 people filled Vergas for pancakes, a 5K and a maple syrup contest, giving the town an early spring lift.

About 650 people turned out in Vergas on Saturday, April 11, as Maple Syrup Fest packed the town with pancakes, a 5K run-walk and a maple syrup tasting contest that made the small community feel like a spring destination.
The day centered on a pancake breakfast at the Vergas Event Center, where organizers served pancakes with local maple syrup, sausage and beverages. The festival was put together through the Vergas Community Club and city channels, and the mix of food and family activity helped turn the event into more than a breakfast crowd. It drew residents, visitors and syrup fans into a single morning of steady traffic through Vergas.
A maple syrup tasting contest at Refine Homes added a competitive edge to the celebration, with winners announced at 11 a.m. The producers contest drew a record 32 entries this year, a sign that maple-making remains a strong part of the local culture. Tom Franklin and Natalie Franklin took home the win, giving the contest a local finish that fit the festival’s community-first feel.
Mayor Julie Bruhn and Lions Club Service Chair Janelle Lotzer described the festival as Vergas’s unofficial kickoff to spring, and the turnout backed that up. In a county where small-town events often set the tone for the season, Maple Syrup Fest gave Downtown Vergas a burst of shoulder-season energy and pulled people into town for more than one activity. The crowd moved between the event center, Refine Homes and the 5K route, creating a full morning that helped make Vergas feel busy long before the summer lake season starts.
The festival has deep roots in the community. The first Maple Syrup Fest was held on April 1, 2000, and the event was not held in 2020 because of COVID-19 restrictions. More than two decades later, the same basic formula still works in Otter Tail County: local syrup, local volunteers and a town-wide celebration that brings people together around a shared spring tradition.
