Appalachian 1000 rally will finish in Owsley County in 2026

Booneville will be the finish line for Appalachian 1000: Dueling Banjos, a 1,000-plus-mile endurance rally that starts in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, and ends in Owsley County from July 9-12, 2026. For a county of 4,051 people, the stop puts Booneville at the center of a regional motorsports run rather than a single-day local event.

Backroads of Appalachia says competitors will have 72 hours to complete the route, which is open to SUVs, trucks, street-legal side-by-sides and motorcycles. The course is built around pavement, gravel, dirt, mud and rocky surfaces, and the organizers say teams may use multiple drivers or spotters, with chase vehicles and support staff encouraged. The suggested donation is $500 per vehicle, with a portion of entry proceeds going to a charity in the Appalachian region.

That matters on the ground because a finish line draws more than the vehicles themselves. Support crews, spectators and participants looking for food, fuel and a place to stay can bring short-term business into Booneville and nearby Old Landing, especially in a county where the median household income is estimated at $22,188. At the same time, the rally’s mix of trucks, motorcycles and off-road machines raises the usual tradeoffs for a small place: more traffic on local roads, more wear on unpaved stretches, and more noise around the route as teams arrive after a 72-hour run.

The Appalachian Overland Triangle, which says it occupies 199 acres in Booneville and Old Landing, has already become part of that picture. The Booneville Sentinel reported that the Sports Car Club of America Great Lakes Division RallyCross Divisional Challenge came to the site June 19-21, 2026, giving Owsley County a recent example of how off-road events can bring outside attention to the area. A separate report said the Appalachian Overland Triangle headquarters project is underway near Booneville, on Little Sturgeon Creek Road.

Backroads of Appalachia says the broader model is economic development through motorsports tourism, job training and opportunity in underserved parts of Appalachia. The nonprofit says it held 64 events in 2022, drew more than 45,000 participants and generated an estimated $9 million to $13 million in regional economic impact. It also says the Appalachian 1000 will help support Special Operations Adventure Foundation efforts that benefit veterans and their families, tying the Owsley County finish line to a charity run with regional reach.
