Owsley County to Host Inaugural SCCA RallyCross Event in April 2026

Backroads of Appalachia and the Sports Car Club of America are bringing Owsley County's first sanctioned motorsports competition to the Appalachian Overland Triangle this Saturday, when the AOT Rally-X Spring Challenge opens at 2843 Little Sturgeon Creek Road in the Old Landing area outside Booneville.

The one-day event, set for April 11, marks the first SCCA-sanctioned RallyCross competition held at the AOT site and the first in what organizers intend to build into a recurring motorsports series for Eastern Kentucky. The SCCA, the nation's largest amateur motorsports club, is sanctioning the event, meaning it will operate under national RallyCross safety and competition standards.

RallyCross routes competitors one at a time through a timed dirt or gravel course and is designed to accommodate a wide range of drivers and street-legal vehicles, a feature organizers have emphasized in pitching the event as accessible to first-time competitors as well as experienced club racers. Registration has been circulated through SCCA and motorsports registration platforms ahead of Saturday's start.

Organizers set an entry cap to keep operations manageable, and primitive camping is available on site, a combination designed to encourage multi-day stays and spending across the local economy. Even a modest field, measured in dozens of drivers and their crews, generates demand for fuel, food and lodging in a county with a small tax base and limited commercial infrastructure. Booneville-area fuel stations, restaurants and lodging providers are expected to see increased traffic on and around event day.

The economic pitch, though, reaches beyond a single Saturday. Backroads of Appalachia and regional advocates framed the Rally-X Spring Challenge as part of a deliberate strategy to develop a motorsports tourism corridor in Eastern Kentucky, diversifying the region's visitor economy alongside existing outdoor and heritage offerings. Organizers argue that motorsports participants routinely extend trips to explore nearby trails and campgrounds, producing a spending multiplier that a one-day headcount does not fully reflect.

If the inaugural event draws the turnout organizers anticipate, the AOT Rally-X Spring Challenge is intended as the first of multiple sanctioned competitions at the Booneville site, potentially positioning the Little Sturgeon Creek Road facility as a recurring stop on an emerging Eastern Kentucky motorsports circuit.
