State Road 62 in Perry County to close for culvert replacement
State Road 62 will close near Saint Croix on May 11 for culvert work, cutting a key Perry County route for about two weeks.
State Road 62 will close near Saint Croix between Cloverdale Road and Oklahoma Road beginning on or around Monday, May 11, as crews replace culverts along the corridor. The Indiana Department of Transportation said the work is expected to take about two weeks, weather permitting, and the notice gave drivers roughly 10 days to adjust plans before the shutdown begins.
Even though the closure is outside Tell City and Cannelton proper, it affects a road that many Perry County residents use to move across the county for work, school runs, medical appointments, farm traffic and other daily trips. With no detailed detour spelled out in the notice, the closure will force drivers to build their own alternate routes around Saint Croix for at least part of May, a disruption that could ripple through delivery schedules and morning commutes as spring travel picks up.
18 WJTS reported that the shutdown will allow for two culvert replacement projects, which points to more than one drainage structure needing attention in the same stretch of road. Culvert work usually comes before a bigger problem develops, and on a rural highway like State Road 62, that kind of maintenance can be difficult to delay without turning a short closure into a more serious roadway issue later.
INDOT posts road restrictions, closures and construction updates on its Restrictions/Closings page, and it also uses the Trafficwise 511 map to track active and planned work. For Perry County drivers, that means the State Road 62 closure should stay on the radar until crews finish the Saint Croix project and reopen the road after the weather allows.
