Tell City gym gets major renovation ahead of school events

Tell City-Troy Twp School Corp. trustees moved an auxiliary gym project toward bidding after reviewing UDA site and building plans at a Feb. 17 work session, where utility and bus-egress issues were flagged. The procurement schedule put the project out to bid March 3, with a possible award at the April 14 meeting.

The review matters because the gym is intended to handle school events as well as athletics in Tell City, where building access and utility hookups can shape how a facility functions once work starts. The board’s concerns showed that the project still had practical hurdles to clear before it could become a working part of the school property.

The gym effort also fits into a wider round of athletics investment in Tell City. On March 14, 2025, officials were making progress on a sports complex project, another sign that school and recreation facilities in Perry County were being pushed forward at the same time.

Perry County has seen how much weight a gym can carry in a small town. In Cannelton, community leaders had been looking to revive the 1928 gym, and Mayor Ralph Terry said, “It’s been pride that is the reason that we want to restore the old gym.” That restoration effort showed how these buildings can function as both school space and a marker of local history, a pattern that now runs through Tell City’s latest gym work.
