Phillips County Library expands hours to boost access for residents

Phillips County Library is expanding its hours in Helena to give residents more time with books, computers and digital services, including a Tuesday evening window that runs until 6 p.m. The new schedule opens Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., adds Tuesday hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and keeps the building open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The change matters in Phillips County, where work schedules, school pickups, family responsibilities and transportation gaps can make a standard weekday visit difficult. Longer hours give working parents a chance to stop in after shift changes, let students use library space for assignments and research, and give job seekers more time to sit down at a computer without rushing through the day. Adults who rely on public internet access can also use the building outside the narrowest business hours.

That broader role is built into the library’s services. The Phillips County Library website says computers are available at all branches, and it links users to the Arkansas Digital Library Consortium for ebooks. The Arkansas State Library identifies the site as the Phillips County Library, Phillips-Lee-Monroe Regional Library Headquarters, placing Helena’s library at the center of a larger regional system rather than a single neighborhood stop.

The expansion also fits the way libraries function in rural Arkansas. The Institute of Museum and Library Services says older adults, rural residents, people with lower incomes or less education, and racial minorities are less likely to have broadband at home. The American Library Association has said the pandemic pushed work, school and other daily tasks online and exposed deeper digital divides, especially in places where internet access is uneven. In that setting, a public library is not just a place to borrow books. It is a place to apply for jobs, finish homework, research a topic, check email and connect to online services.

Statewide numbers show how heavily Arkansans already depend on that system. Arkansas public libraries recorded 6,912,716 visits in 2024, along with 1,514,456 library card holders, 1,236,012 reference transactions and 395,312 total hours of operation across 187 public libraries, according to the Arkansas Libraries Report to Congress 2026.

Phillips County Library also continues to serve as a community gathering point. A Community Resource Day tied to the library was listed for Thursday, May 14, from 1 to 6 p.m. at 702 Porter St. in Helena, with Arkansas Strong and the library hosting the event. The Helena Museum of Phillips County says the former Helena Library section of the museum was constructed in 1891, a reminder that library access has long been part of the county’s civic life.
