Clarkco State Park blends outdoor recreation with historic CCC roots

Clarkco State Park sits near the Mississippi-Alabama line with woods, cabins, and trails, while Archusa Creek Water Park centers on a lake in Quitman. For Quitman County residents who want a simple day outside without planning a long trip, they offer two nearby escapes. Together, they give families, church groups, anglers, and weekend visitors two very different ways to stay close to home.

Clarkco State Park: the fuller all-purpose outing

Clarkco opened in 1938 and was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which gives the park a place in the New Deal landscape as well as in today’s recreation map. It is one of Mississippi’s eight original state parks, according to Living New Deal, and that history still shows up in the park’s mostly forested setting near Quitman in Clarke County. The CCC helped erect Clarkco to preserve wildlife and provide jobs.

The park’s size and activity mix are what make it easy to use for everyday outings. Camping, cabin rentals, water sports on Clarkco Lake, picnicking, hiking, tennis, and disc golf mean one visit can work for a wide range of ages and interests. The state Blue Book lists 50 RV campsites, eight tent camping sites, 10 lakeside vacation cabin units, a laundry facility, a disc golf course, and nature trails.

One of Clarkco’s most practical features is the five-mile trail loop around the lake. The nature trail is open year-round, and cyclists are permitted, so it works in more than one season and for more than one pace of visit. That makes Clarkco especially useful when you want something steadier than a splash pad and more flexible than a one-stop picnic area. It can hold an overnight stay, a morning walk, a bike ride, or a church outing without forcing everyone into the same activity.

Clarkco has also gone through a visible round of repairs and upgrades that matter to anyone thinking about a visit now. On December 11, 2023, renovations had started on the cabins and facilities, with phase 1 planned for completion by May 2024. That work included refurbishing cabins, redoing campsite pads, and upgrading water, sewage, and electrical systems. The park reopened at 8:00 a.m. on March 19, 2026 with 43 newly updated RV campsites and six newly renovated cabins, giving the park a stronger overnight profile than before.

Archusa Creek Water Park: the lake-first choice

Archusa Creek Water Park sits in Quitman, just off Hwy. 45 and Hwy. 18 East, and its identity starts with water. The park centers on a 450-acre lake, a size that gives the site real weight as a local fishing and boating destination. Large quantities of fish are stocked there, and bass, catfish, perch, and bream are part of the lake’s appeal.

That makes Archusa a strong fit when the point of the outing is fishing first and everything else second. The site also functions as a campground, so it can support a stay that stretches beyond a single afternoon. For families or smaller groups that want a lake setting without the larger spread of Clarkco, Archusa offers a more focused, water-centered experience.

The Pat Harrison Waterway District manages Archusa as part of its park system. A 2002 PEER review looked at complaints that the district was not giving Archusa its fair share of resources. Archusa Creek Dam is a low-hazard recreational dam built in 1971 with Bureau of Outdoor Recreation funding, according to a congressional funding request.

Archusa has also seen serious disruption. A dam break at the park sent flooding into Quitman. Swimming, boating, and day use were unavailable at one point because of the lake’s status, while cabins, campsites, and the lodge hall were not affected.

How to use both parks in a local plan

Clarkco is the better fit when the outing needs variety. Its 815 acres, cabin stock, RV and tent sites, laundry facility, and trail loop make it easier to build a full weekend around one place, and the year-round trail adds a reliable option even when the weather is not ideal for swimming. Archusa is the better fit when the day is built around a stocked lake, fishing gear, and a campground near Quitman.
