Early-morning Brunswick garage fire prompts mutual aid, no injuries

A garage fire at 50 Gundalo Gap Road, off Mere Point Road in Brunswick, was reported just before 7 p.m. Saturday by a neighbor and crews "put out the flames within about 15 minutes, the fire chief said." Engines and tankers were called from "five or six other towns" to assist on scene and to provide station coverage while crews worked, Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Brillant told reporters.

The family who live at the property, identified in tax records as Matthew and Christina Corbett, evacuated safely and their four young children went to a neighbor’s home, officials said. "Brillant said the family wasn’t displaced, but were weighing whether to stay at the neighbor’s home for the night," the chief reported as firefighters completed overhaul and secured the scene.

During suppression operations one member of the Brunswick department experienced a medical issue while "working to ventilate the building" and "was taken to Mid Coast Hospital as a precaution after suffering a medical issue." "As of 9 p.m. Saturday he was still being evaluated in the emergency room and Brillant was hopeful he would be discharged later the same evening," the chief added.

Local accounts and an independent report contain a conflicting timeline for the incident. One account states, "Firefighters responded to a fully involved garage fire in Brunswick, Maine, in the early hours of March 7, 2026," and that "The incident was reported at approximately 2:45 a.m., and fire crews from the primary responding department requested mutual aid to assist at the scene and to provide cover." Those early-morning timestamps differ from the neighbor-reported just-before-7 p.m. call and the Saturday evening timeline on which Brillant commented. Officials have not provided a consolidated dispatch timeline to reconcile the discrepancy.

Brillant praised the on-scene response, saying "The guys did a good job," and calling containment "a really good save. Some things really worked in our favor." The department credited rapid mutual-aid mobilization and coordinated water supply as factors that prevented the fire from spreading to the nearby house.

Town and county investigators have not released a cause or damage estimate. Brunswick Fire Department requested mutual aid "to assist at the scene and to provide cover," and neighboring departments responded with engines and tankers; the department has not yet issued a final statement on whether the firefighter treated at Mid Coast Hospital will be officially recorded as injured. Fire officials and dispatch records remain the appropriate sources to confirm the exact incident time and the status of the department member after hospital evaluation.
