Emma Coates crossed the Atlantic to rebuild a struggling Bay FC squad, and two days before the club's March 14 home opener at PayPal Park in San Jose, the former England youth coach made clear she believes the pieces are in place to erase the memory of a last-place 2025 finish.

Three months after Kay Cossington hired Coates to lead Bay FC into its third NWSL season, the English coach appeared on The Standard's Section 415 podcast to outline her vision for the club and preview Saturday's opener against Denver Summit FC, an expansion side making its own league debut.

Coates joined Bay FC on December 4, bringing a résumé built on England's Women's U-19 and U-23 programs. She wasted little time reshaping the roster, adding forward Alex Pfeiffer, defender Heather Gilchrist, and midfielders Keira Barry and Anouk Denton ahead of the season. On the podcast, Coates also discussed how U.S. women's national team star Claire Hutton could serve as a transformational figure for the club going forward.

Pfeiffer drew particular praise from Coates in a February club preview. "Alex is exciting to watch when she gets the ball," Coates said. "She's brave with some of the decisions she makes and she really wants to impose a personality on the game. That's the type of players we want here."

The early returns from a demanding preseason camp and a series of friendlies gave Coates reason for optimism about the group's culture as much as its talent. "My first impressions is we've got really good people, really good culture here," she said. "The training sessions that we've had so far have gone really well. We're trying to build clarity on how we want to play. It's been a great start and we're looking forward to building on it."

The youth of the incoming class factors heavily into Coates' long-term thinking. "I'm excited with the players we've brought in because they're so young, you just know there's significant progress they can make," she said. "Everyone has brought their best and trainings have been competitive."

Bay FC's March 14 opener against Denver Summit FC at PayPal Park will be the first public test of that preseason work and the first glimpse of what Coates means when she talks about building a clearer playing identity. Whether the rebound she envisions begins Saturday depends on how quickly a remade, youthful roster translates competitive training sessions into competitive results.
