Madrone Art Bar Launches $1,500 Grants for Four San Francisco Visual Artists
Madrone Art Bar on Divisadero is giving four SF visual artists $1,500 each, plus commission-free solo shows, as arts funding citywide continues to shrink.

At 500 Divisadero St., where gallery shows share space with nightlife most evenings, Madrone Art Bar has launched a micro-grant program designed to keep early- and mid-career San Francisco visual artists working in the city.
The Madrone Artist Grant will award $1,500 to each of four San Francisco-based visual artists, who will also receive solo exhibitions at the Divisadero Street venue and the right to sell their exhibited work commission-free. Applications open April 1 and are accepted through June 1.
Courtney Greene, Madrone's events and community programming manager, and owner Spike Krouse developed the program after watching what they described as other pillars of San Francisco's arts community crumble. They said they hope the grants will support artists in the early or middle stages of their careers and help them continue creating in the city.
Rather than rely on a single curator to evaluate entries, Krouse built a five-judge selection panel. Holly Wong, a fiber- and mixed-media artist who will serve as one of the panelists, said the varied perspectives will allow the group to have "rich conversations about the strength of San Francisco culture and what this critical funding can do for artists in the next stage of their careers." She added that the program will show others how "San Francisco remains such a rich, creative environment despite all the challenges."

The grant arrives as public and private arts funding has contracted sharply across the city. Greene and Krouse framed the initiative as a deliberate choice to double down on local artists rather than pull back alongside the broader funding retreat.
The four other judges on the selection panel have not been announced, nor have exhibition dates for the recipients. Visual artists based in San Francisco can apply beginning April 1 at Madrone Art Bar.
