A block on 22nd Street in San Francisco's Mission District was sealed off and evacuated Sunday afternoon after officers found a suspicious device inside a building, prompting a two-hour response that ultimately ended with no injuries and the device declared safe.

Officers were called to the 3100 block of 22nd Street, between South Van Ness Avenue and Folsom Street, at about 1:36 p.m. Sunday, March 22. SFPD spokesperson Officer Robert Rueca said officers deemed the unknown device a potential risk and evacuated residents on the block "as a precaution." Police set up a perimeter with yellow tape and blocked roadways as the San Francisco Fire Department advised the public to stay at least one block away to allow emergency personnel access to the area.

An SF Alert message went out to the public about 30 minutes after the initial call, asking people to avoid the area. By about 3:20 p.m., emergency crews including an explosive ordnance disposal team and San Francisco firefighters were on scene working to determine how to safely remove the object. The SFPD told KTVU that officers found the device in a building but the department could not immediately identify it. Police did not describe the object or explain what made it suspicious.

The San Francisco Fire Department announced just after 3:30 p.m. that police had cleared the scene and that roadways would soon be reopened to traffic. Around 3:40 p.m., Officer Rueca confirmed the device had been deemed safe.

No injuries or threats were reported. The SFPD provided no further information about what the device was or whether any follow-up investigation was planned.
