Police arrest suspect after fatal Mission District hit-and-run chase
A pedestrian was killed at Mission and South Van Ness, where police say a Mercedes fled, then was chased down and the driver detained.

A pedestrian died at Mission Street and South Van Ness Avenue after a driver fled the scene and led San Francisco police on a chase through the Mission District. Officers detained the suspect after tracking down the Mercedes, and investigators said there may have been other occupants in the car, including a baby.
The collision happened just before 3:30 p.m. Monday on Mission Street between South Van Ness Avenue and 13th Street. Police said the driver struck the pedestrian, drove off, and was later stopped after a short pursuit. The victim died at the scene, turning one of the city’s busiest transit and traffic corridors into the center of another deadly crash investigation.
SFPD’s Homicide Detail took over the case. The specialized unit has 16 sworn members, including 15 investigators and one officer, along with two retired investigators assigned to the Cold Case Unit and one civilian support staff member. Its involvement signals the seriousness of the case and the push to reconstruct exactly how the driver fled, who was in the vehicle, and what happened in the moments before the pedestrian was killed.
The crash is the latest in a corridor that Mission District residents and traffic-safety advocates have long described as dangerous. Mission Street and South Van Ness have seen repeated collisions and pursuit incidents in recent years, including another South Van Ness hit-and-run case reported in 2022. For neighbors who cross that stretch on foot, ride Muni, or navigate the signal-heavy intersection by car, the death will likely renew questions about whether enforcement and street-safety changes have been enough to curb reckless driving.
The fatality also comes amid continuing scrutiny of how quickly police can track a fleeing driver and how much harm can unfold in seconds on city streets. Here, officers moved from a deadly hit-and-run to a pursuit and arrest in short order, but the outcome still left a pedestrian dead at one of San Francisco’s most heavily traveled crossroads.
