A man who worked on the Biden White House advance team fatally shot his 22-year-old roommate inside their apartment on the 2200 block of 22nd Avenue, between Rivera and Santiago streets in the Sunset District, and has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in her death. Nation Wood, 25, was arrested after investigators determined he was handling a firearm when Samantha Emge, a 2025 San Francisco State University graduate who worked in interior design, was struck by a round and died at a local hospital.

Wood allegedly told investigators he was "dry-firing" his gun inside the apartment and did not realize it was loaded when a round traveled through the wall and struck Emge, according to the San Francisco Standard. Officers arrived at the residence at approximately 10:43 p.m. on March 24 and found Emge suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics transported her with life-threatening injuries; she was pronounced dead at the hospital despite efforts by first responders and medical staff. The San Francisco Homicide Detail assumed control of the investigation.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced the charge, involuntary manslaughter under Penal Code 192(b), after homicide investigators developed probable cause to arrest Wood. Charging documents accuse Wood of killing Emge "without malice," the statutory language that distinguishes an unintentional killing from murder while still holding a person criminally accountable. Wood had been initially detained when officers arrived at the scene, then formally arrested early Wednesday morning and booked into San Francisco County Jail.

At a Friday afternoon hearing, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Christopher Hu set Wood's bail at $300,000. His arraignment was scheduled for March 27 at 1:30 p.m. in the Hall of Justice under court docket number 26006718.

"This is a very fresh investigation," District Attorney Jenkins said. "While I understand some facts have come out, we are just beginning to determine everything that took place in that apartment that night." Jenkins confirmed only Wood and Emge were present in the apartment at the time and declined to comment on the nature of their relationship, noting the two lived together.

Wood's LinkedIn profile describes him as an "independent pre-event site security adviser" conducting assessments for "events with VIP attendance," with experience on the White House advance team and with the U.S. Secret Service. A White House spokesperson confirmed that Wood was employed as part of the Biden administration. TMZ separately reported that Wood had posed for a photograph with former Vice President Kamala Harris, a claim not independently confirmed.

Sunset District Supervisor Alan Wong addressed the shooting in a statement. "I'm deeply saddened by this tragic incident in our community," Wong said. "My thoughts are with the victim and her loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Any loss of life in our community is devastating, regardless of the circumstances."
