Two Separate San Francisco Shootings Kill Two People Within Minutes

Residents of the Sunnydale neighborhood and the Sunset District watched emergency vehicles descend on their streets Tuesday night as two separate shootings left two people dead within minutes of each other, police said.

The first shooting was reported at 10:43 p.m. on the 1800 block of Sunnydale Avenue, where officers found a male victim who had been shot several times. He was transported to a hospital but did not survive. By approximately 10:45 p.m., police were responding to a second scene in the Sunset District, near Santiago Street and 22nd Avenue, where a man had allegedly shot a woman. She was also taken to a local hospital, where she died. Neither victim's identity had been released as of Wednesday morning.

At the Sunset District scene, nearby residents watched from a distance as the usually quiet neighborhood filled with police cars and fire trucks. Officers cordoned off what appeared to be a pool of blood on the sidewalk with crime scene tape.

Despite the near-simultaneous timing, the San Francisco Police Department told reporters the two shootings appear to be separate incidents and unrelated. Homicide detectives are investigating both cases. No arrests had been announced and police had not released any details about a suspected shooter as of Wednesday morning.

The two deaths add to a recent string of fatal shootings in the city. On March 4, a person was shot on the 100 block of Sixth Street in the South of Market neighborhood and later died at a hospital; that victim was subsequently identified as Carl Jones Jr., 43. The previous month, one person was killed and another critically wounded in a shooting near Dakota and 25th streets in the Potrero Hill public housing neighborhood, which police described at the time as the fifth homicide reported in San Francisco in February.
