Aztec, Kirtland Central Enter District 1-4A Softball Play as Early Front-Runners

Kirtland Central enters District 1-4A softball play ranked third in Class 4A by MaxPreps, while Aztec arrives as the defending district champion with two-way standout Kamora Henry carrying the Tigers' momentum, positioning both San Juan County programs among the early front-runners in what figures to be a tight league race.
The Broncos built their early-season ranking through balanced production at the plate during the Kristen Griego Tournament and Linda Crabtree Memorial, a pair of invitationals played March 20-27 across the Rio Rancho and Farmington Sports Complex areas. Lacey Parrish and Easton Myhre each posted multi-hit games during that stretch, and the collective output proved decisive in a 9-8 tournament victory over Hobbs. Grinding through a one-run game against a Hobbs program demonstrates the kind of clutch execution that holds up through district play and into the postseason.
Henry gave Aztec a different dimension altogether. The pitcher and outfielder struck out 10 batters in a complete game at one tournament stop, then delivered a two-run home run in a separate contest. That combination of mound endurance and run production is rare at the 4A level, and it gave Aztec strong footing before the first district pitch. The Tigers won the District 1-4A title last season and made a deep state playoff run, raising the bar for what this team expects of itself in the weeks ahead.

Both programs used the Linda Crabtree Memorial and Kristen Griego Tournament as pre-district proving grounds, and each emerged with reasons for confidence. Kirtland brings lineup depth and demonstrated composure in close games; Aztec brings a proven ace and the institutional memory of a program that has been here before.
District play begins imminently, with home games slated for the Farmington Sports Complex and individual school fields. Given the credentials both teams carry into league competition, the 1-4A title race has the makings of a genuine fight from the opening week.
