Farmington police are investigating a homicide on the 400 block of East Broadway after a welfare check turned into a deadly case in one of the city’s busiest corridors.

Around 12:30 a.m. on April 15, the Farmington Fire Department Alternative Response Unit responded to a report of an unresponsive person in the area. Crews found a 43-year-old man outside a building with significant injuries, rendered aid and took him to San Juan Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Police have not identified a suspect, announced any arrests or described what caused the man’s injuries. Investigators have said the case remains active and ongoing as detectives work to piece together what happened along East Broadway in the early morning hours.

The location adds to the urgency for people who live, work and travel through the Main Street and Broadway corridor. The Farmington Historic Downtown Commercial District runs along those streets for about eight blocks, from Auburn Avenue to Miller Avenue, and includes 96 commercial buildings with storefronts facing the street. The area is not just a business district; the City of Farmington describes downtown as an arts and cultural district tied to redevelopment efforts, and the Farmington Downtown Development Authority was established in 1986 to support preservation and economic growth there.

A violent death in that setting raises immediate concerns for nearby businesses, overnight workers and residents who rely on East Broadway as a connector through central Farmington. It also shifts the response from medical rescue to homicide investigation, with detectives expected to rely on witness interviews, scene processing and surveillance review to determine how the man was hurt.

The case comes as Farmington continues to face scrutiny over serious violence. In September 2025, police investigated a double homicide in southeast Farmington that left a 15-year-old and a 19-year-old dead, another reminder that major violent-crime cases have continued to affect families across San Juan County.

Police are asking the public to remain patient as the investigation develops. For now, the confirmed facts are limited: a welfare check in the 400 block of East Broadway, a 43-year-old man with severe injuries, a death at San Juan Regional Medical Center and a homicide investigation that is still unfolding in the center of Farmington.
