Dump truck overturns in Duluth parking lot, injures multiple people

A dump truck tipped onto its side in the Speedway parking lot at 6th Avenue East and 4th Street in Duluth around 9:30 a.m., spilling its contents across the area and bringing a police response to a busy east-side corner. A damaged SUV was also towed from the scene.

Duluth police said the truck was heading downhill on 6th Avenue East when the driver tried to stop but could not slow down. The truck ran a red light, struck another vehicle and then overturned near the Speedway gas station, leaving the corner littered with debris and the truck’s scattered load.

All drivers involved and one passenger were taken to a local hospital with injuries. The crash left the truck on its side in the lot and drew attention to how quickly a commercial vehicle can turn a routine traffic movement into a multi-vehicle wreck in a tight parking-lot entrance.

The scene also pointed to the kind of questions investigators often face after a rollover at a busy intersection: whether speed, load balance or the layout of the lot and roadway helped turn a downhill approach into a crash. One local report described the incident as a chain-reaction collision involving parked vehicles, and the damaged SUV seen being hauled away suggested the impact may have extended beyond the first struck vehicle.
