The Figure Skating Club of Park City staged its Holiday Extravaganza on Ice at the Park City Ice Arena, 600 Gillmor Way, on Saturday, December 6. Two performances were offered at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Tickets had been available through TicketLeap, and concessions were offered at both shows. The program centered local skaters and invited families to a seasonal showcase at the community rink.

Events like this place community recreation in public view. Local skaters from youth through adult levels took the ice, providing performance opportunities that reinforce skills developed in regular practice sessions. For families, coaches, volunteer organizers and arena staff, the show offered a chance to celebrate progress, build social connections and strengthen the informal networks that sustain youth sport and arts programming.

Beyond entertainment, holiday performances have public health implications. Ice skating is a form of moderate to vigorous physical activity that supports cardiovascular fitness, balance and coordination, and can contribute to wellbeing and social belonging. Community performances create shared experiences that reduce isolation and can improve mental health, especially during winter months when seasonal stress and isolation can increase. At the same time, such events underscore the need for attention to safety, injury prevention and on site preparedness, including basic first aid and accessible facilities.

The prominence of a community focused ice show also raises questions about equity and access. Ice time can be costly and transportation to central arenas can be a barrier for lower income households. The visibility of this event offers local leaders an opportunity to consider investments in subsidized lessons, sliding scale fees, and adaptive programming for people with disabilities. Ensuring that community recreation is affordable and accessible would expand the public health benefits of skating and similar activities to a broader cross section of Summit County residents.

Local recreation venues and nonprofit clubs play a critical role in community health and cohesion. The Holiday Extravaganza on Ice demonstrated the value of that work while highlighting policy choices that could make participation more equitable.
