Motorhome and trailer fire closes westbound I-84 near Echo for hour
A motorhome pulling a trailer burned near Echo before sunrise, closing westbound I-84 for an hour and keeping the right lane blocked until about 7:30 a.m.

Pre-dawn flames shut westbound I-84 near Echo and turned the Wednesday morning commute into a stop-and-go backup when a motorhome pulling a trailer caught fire near mile marker 119, just north of the I-80 interchange. Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden said the trailer and the back of the motorhome had heavy fire.
Utah Department of Transportation first reported the incident about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2026. Westbound traffic was closed for about an hour, then the right lane stayed blocked for another hour while crews worked to remove the damaged motorhome and trailer from the roadway. By about 7:30 a.m., the westbound lanes had fully reopened.
The shutdown hit early-morning travelers in Summit County at one of the corridor’s key choke points, where westbound traffic funnels drivers toward Echo and the I-80 interchange. For commuters, the fire meant a hard stop on a route many use before sunrise to make work schedules, school runs and connections farther west.

Utah Highway Patrol and firefighters responded to the scene, but officials reported no injuries. The cause of the fire was not known. Even so, the loss of a westbound lane in the middle of the morning rush briefly forced the entire corridor to absorb the delay, underscoring how quickly one vehicle fire can ripple through Summit County traffic before dawn.
