A box truck ran over a 13-year-old boy on Kilby Road near the Powderwood Condos just after 11 p.m. Friday, March 13, after a sequence of events that began with two teenagers crashing their electric motorcycles and ended with a well-meaning bystander's spotlight inadvertently obscuring the boy from an oncoming driver's view. The teen was transported to a Salt Lake area hospital and his family said he was expected to survive.

The two boys had been riding Sur-Rons on Kilby Road near the intersection of 2200 West in the Kimball Junction area when their handlebars struck each other, sending both crashing to the ground. One boy was injured and came to rest partially in the travel lane. The other was able to get up and move clear of the road.

A passerby driving a truck equipped with a forward-facing spotlight stopped to help. The driver activated the spotlight to illuminate the scene, moved the injured boy out of the roadway, and began rendering aid. At that point, the second boy walked back into the road to retrieve one of the motorcycles.

That decision proved nearly fatal. A box truck traveling along Kilby Road ran over the boy and the e-motorcycle. The driver later reported that the bright spotlight had blinded their view of the teen and the bike in the road. Summit County Sheriff Sgt. Skyler Talbot confirmed that account, saying the driver reported the spotlight obstructed their view entirely.

"All parties involved are cooperating with the investigation," the Summit County Sheriff's Office said. "At this time, alcohol impairment is not suspected to be a contributing factor in the incident."

As of 6 a.m. Saturday, the boy's family reported he was expected to survive, according to the Sheriff's Office. The investigation remains active.
