Gloria Walters, 87, Lewisburg Resident and Local History Enthusiast, Dies

Gloria L. Walters, 87, a fixture in Lewisburg's community and local-history circles, died peacefully Jan. 22 at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, surrounded by her three daughters. Her passing removes a steady presence from Christ's Lutheran Church and from the small businesses and civic organizations that help define downtown Lewisburg.

Born March 29, 1938, in Danville, Gloria was the daughter of E. Harwood Lyons and Helen (Gordon) Lyons. Gloria grew up in Mount Carmel and relocated with her family to Lewisburg in 1950. A 1955 graduate of Lewisburg High School, she later attended Wyoming Seminary. Gloria married Harold A. Walters on Jan. 12, 1957; Harold Walters preceded her in death in 2019.

Gloria's life was braided with local institutions. She was a longtime member of Christ's Lutheran Church and belonged to the Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Daughters of the American Revolution, organizations that connect Union County residents to broader threads of American genealogy and civic memory. She spent many years working in her mother's Country Cupboard gift shop and at The Mercantile, small businesses that contributed to Lewisburg's Main Street identity. Her interests included local history and genealogy, lifelong bridge playing, reading, raising her family and caring for cats.

Gloria is survived by three daughters, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Visitation will take place from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Christ's Evangelical Lutheran Church, followed by a memorial service. Arrangements are by John H. Shaw III Funeral Home.
