Lewisburg neighborhoods host downtown game night to build community connections
Downtown Lewisburg used a Sunday game night to pull neighbors, families and newcomers into an easy, low-cost way to reconnect in person.

Downtown Lewisburg turned a Sunday afternoon into a test case for small-scale civic repair, as Lewisburg Neighborhoods and CommUnity Zone brought residents together for a community game night from 3 to 6 p.m. The monthly gathering was designed as a relaxed, family-friendly way to get people into the borough’s center, where organizers say simple face-to-face time can help make downtown feel more connected and inclusive.
The event fit a broader effort to move people from isolation and uncertainty toward shared purpose and collective momentum, a mission CommUnity Zone says sits at the center of its work in Lewisburg. The organization opened at 417 Market Street in February 2012 and grew out of C.A.R.E., the Community Alliance for Respect and Equality, which began in 1998 at Bucknell University in response to assaults targeting people of color and LGBTQ people. Today, CommUnity Zone says it continues that work through monthly open meetings, public programs and community-building events, including potluck picnics, holiday celebrations and discussion-focused dinners.
Lewisburg Neighborhoods, meanwhile, says its role is to promote cooperative efforts among neighborhood residents, the Bucknell University community and Lewisburg Borough. Its stated priorities include improving civic engagement, preserving streetscapes and strengthening ties among neighbors while improving quality of life for residents and visitors. The game night gave those goals a concrete setting downtown, where organizers hoped a low-pressure, low-cost activity could draw in families, older residents, newcomers and longtime Lewisburg households alike.

Funding from the Charles B. Degenstein Foundation helped make the gatherings possible on a recurring basis rather than as a one-time event. The foundation was established in 1989 by Charles B. Degenstein and supports local nonprofits in areas including civic affairs, cultural activities, education, social services and the beautification of towns. That kind of support has allowed Lewisburg Neighborhoods and CommUnity Zone to keep the monthly game nights going since last fall.
The setting mattered as much as the activity. Lewisburg Borough describes itself as a historic community on the Susquehanna River and a primary commercial center in Union County, and downtown Lewisburg is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In a town where the borough, Bucknell University and neighborhood groups often overlap, a recurring gathering like game night offers more than entertainment: it keeps people downtown after normal business hours and gives residents a regular place to meet, talk and stay engaged with one another.
