Suspect arrested after armed carjacking outside Raleigh Walmart

Police caught a suspect after an armed carjacking outside the Walmart off Wake Forest Road in Raleigh, where the incident was reported just after 12:35 p.m. Sunday. The arrest closed a fast-moving case that unfolded in the middle of a busy shopping corridor and raised fresh concerns about violence in large retail parking lots.

Authorities said the man was armed when the carjacking happened outside the store. He was later caught after the crime, according to the information released in connection with the case. The Walmart sits in a heavily traveled part of Raleigh, where shoppers, workers and drivers move through the same parking areas throughout the day.

The location is not unfamiliar to local law enforcement. On Jan. 20, 2025, Wake Forest police said a carjacking in Raleigh led to an “armed and dangerous” alert after the suspect and stolen vehicle were found in Wake Forest. Officials described that suspect as a Black male about 25 years old wearing a black hoodie, and said he was last seen near Durham Road and Tyler Run Drive in the Tyler Run Subdivision.

That 2025 search drew officers from the Wake Forest Police Department, the Raleigh Police Department and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office. They searched the area for nearly two hours before the case moved forward, and Wake Forest police urged residents to lock doors and call 911 if they saw anything suspicious.

Taken together, the two cases show how quickly a carjacking can spread beyond the original scene, especially when it starts in a retail area with open parking lots, multiple exits and steady traffic. The Sunday incident outside the Wake Forest Road Walmart unfolded in daylight, and the earlier 2025 case also began in Raleigh before pulling officers into Wake Forest.
