WakeMed Limits Child Visitors to Curb Seasonal Respiratory Spread
WakeMed announced new seasonal visitor restrictions that will take effect December 22, 2025, barring children under 12 from most patient care areas to reduce transmission of influenza and RSV. The change affects Wake County families who plan hospital visits and comes as state health data show rising respiratory illness and flu related deaths this season.

WakeMed announced on December 17 that it will implement seasonal visitation restrictions beginning December 22, 2025. The policy bars children under 12 from visiting patients in hospital nursing units, patient care areas and waiting rooms. The restriction also applies to certain WakeMed Healthplex emergency departments and the WakeMed Mental Health and Well Being Hospital WakeBrook.
Hospital officials framed the step as standard clinical practice intended to protect patients and staff during a period of increased respiratory illness. They acknowledged the decision can be difficult for families who rely on in person visits to support hospitalized loved ones. The measure is timed to address rising circulation of influenza and respiratory syncytial virus, known as RSV, which state health data show have contributed to flu related deaths and broader increases in seasonal respiratory illness this year.
For Wake County residents the policy will change how families coordinate visits, particularly for older adults, people with chronic conditions and patients receiving inpatient mental health care. Children who are normally part of family gatherings at a patient bedside will need alternative arrangements. Visitors planning to come to WakeMed facilities after December 22 should check with the specific hospital or emergency department about the rule and any unit level exceptions, and should plan for remote connections when direct visits are not allowed.

Clinically, restricting child visitors is intended to reduce introduction of respiratory viruses into hospital units where vulnerable patients receive care. Hospitals often use time limited visitor policies during peak respiratory seasons to lower transmission risk and preserve staffing if illness spreads among personnel. The decision reflects a balance between infection prevention and the emotional needs of patients and families.
Wake County residents seeking more information about visitation rules are advised to contact WakeMed directly for details on which emergency departments are affected, unit specific guidance and options for arranging virtual visits or family communication during a patient stay.
