1 killed, 3 injured in shooting after California graduation ceremony

A graduation celebration at Fairfield High School ended in gunfire Wednesday night, leaving an 18-year-old dead and three other people wounded in the parking lot outside the campus in Fairfield, California.

Police said shots were fired around 7:15 p.m. after a Sem Yeto High School graduation ceremony had ended. The 18-year-old victim died at the scene. The other victims, an 11-year-old child and adults ages 20 and 25, were taken to area hospitals.

Witnesses described a fast-moving scene as the danger became clear. One person said shots rang out while photographs were being taken in the parking lot. A nearby resident said people were screaming and running through the lot after the shooting, a reminder of how quickly a school gathering can turn chaotic when crowds are still lingering after a ceremony.

Fairfield police said there was no immediate indication of an ongoing threat to the community, but no suspect had been arrested and investigators had not released a suspect description. The Solano County Sheriff's Office was assisting Fairfield police in the case, which officials described as a large-scale incident.

The shooting unfolded at Fairfield High School, which shares its campus with Sem Yeto High School, a continuation high school. The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District said classes would continue as scheduled through the week, even as investigators worked the scene and families across Solano County tried to understand how violence reached a graduation night meant to mark a milestone. In Suisun City, Mayor Alma Hernandez wrote on Facebook that a search was underway for the shooter and urged anyone with information to contact police.
