One killed, three injured in California graduation ceremony shooting

A celebration for Sem Yeto High School students ended in gunfire at Fairfield High School, leaving an 18-year-old dead and three others injured, including an 11-year-old child. The shooting erupted around 7:15 p.m. on June 3 in the parking lot of the Fairfield campus, where the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District was holding the continuation school’s commencement ceremony.

Authorities said the gunfire broke out just after the event ended, turning what should have been a milestone night for graduates and families into a chaotic crime scene in Solano County. The 18-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured included two adults, ages 20 and 25, and the child, who were taken to area hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately known.

Fairfield police said there was no ongoing threat to the community, but no suspects were in custody and no arrests had been announced. The Solano County Sheriff’s Office was helping Fairfield police investigate the shooting, as officials worked to determine how violence reached a ceremony on a school campus that was still crowded with students, relatives and staff.

The district said classes would continue as scheduled through the week, a sign of how quickly schools are often forced to shift from celebration to recovery after violence interrupts a public event. Sem Yeto High School, a continuation high school, shares the Fairfield High School campus, and the shooting has now placed both school communities under the strain of a deadly incident at one of the year’s most significant gatherings.
