Berlin Pride attack kills one, injures 16 in Tiergarten clash

A car drove into crowds near Berlin’s Christopher Street Day parade route in Tiergarten on Saturday, killing one woman and injuring at least 16 people before the Pride event was called off. Berlin police launched a manhunt and urged people to avoid the area as emergency crews treated victims, some of whom suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police later identified the suspect as a 21-year-old man from Berlin. Officers said they believed he had ties to Islamist circles in the German capital, and later said all evidence pointed to an Islamist motive. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt also said all evidence pointed to an Islamist background.

The violence cut through one of Europe’s best-known LGBTQ celebrations, a public parade built around visibility, rights and safety. Reports from the scene said several victims were hurt with stabbing weapons as well as by the vehicle, adding to fears that the attack may have involved more than one method.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the assault as “heinous” after the car was driven into the crowd near Tiergarten park. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner called it “an attack on our free and open-minded society,” a description that captured the immediate political and civic stakes as city leaders moved to support the injured and confront security questions around major public events.

The attack landed during Berlin’s annual Christopher Street Day, turning a festive march into an emergency response scene. For the city’s LGBTQ community, the injuries and death were followed by grief, while police focused on securing the route, identifying the suspect and establishing the full chain of events that led to the crash.
