Call of Duty launches Black Ops Royale no-loadout Warzone mode on Avalon

Call of Duty Staff announced Black Ops Royale, a free Blackout-inspired Warzone mode that debuts March 12 at 9PM PT, which is midnight March 13 at 12AM ET on the East Coast, and lands on a new large-scale map called Avalon. The studio bills the mode as "the evolution of Blackout" and says players will "scavenge to survive" in matches built around pick-up loot and in-match weapon progression.

Black Ops Royale rips out several of modern Warzone’s staples. Call of Duty Staff and Insider Gaming list three headline changes: no Loadouts, no Gulag, and no Buy Stations. Matches are up to 100 players organized into 25 Quad teams, meaning squads of four must "outlast 24 rival squads on Avalon" and "be the last team standing," while wingsuiting in and scavenging for weapons that can "upgrade through rarity" during play.

Avalon is presented as a very different Warzone environment compared with Verdansk, Rebirth Island, and Haven’s Hollow. Insider Gaming describes Avalon as "a brighter, more vibrant environment free of Endgame’s red fog" with "tight city zones, layered interior fights, open routes for quick rotations, and long sightlines ideal for ranged play." Treyarch has reportedly reduced large water areas on Avalon, adding sand paths and new land bridges to connect zones and speed rotations. Insider Gaming also notes a visible circle marks the shrinking perimeter and that the boundary moves at the start of each match to force use of the whole map across different games.

Gameplay features called out by Call of Duty Staff include wingsuit insertion and a named mechanic players will need to "master Cradle Breaches." The mode revives an emphasis on scavenging and survival, with the marketing copy even echoing the original Blackout tagline "Oh, and don't forget the zombies" in its historical context. Shrinking-boundary mechanics are described as forcing fights to the death while encouraging varied rotations across Avalon.

Black Ops Royale ties into existing progression. Call of Duty Staff says the mode "comes fully integrated into the Black Ops 7 and the Call of Duty: Warzone experience, with earnable rewards, unlockable content, and a large-scale Event you can access across all game modes." At launch players can "earn the Swordfish A1, new Attachments, Operator Skins, and more," and a Counter Skies Event Pass runs from March 17 to April 2. The blog excerpt also mentions Black Ops Royale Playlist Challenges with three free rewards accessible from a menu box next to the playlist.

Promotional rollout began with an official launch trailer posted to YouTube on March 2. IGN’s upload shows the trailer description telling players to "Drop in, explore the map, and loot up in Black Ops Royale for Call of Duty: Warzone, launching on March 13," and the clip had tens of thousands of views and several hundred likes and comments in the early posting window.

Early reaction from outlets frames Black Ops Royale as a bold rules change for Warzone. PCGamesN’s Jamie Hore wrote that "Call of Duty's Black Ops Royale is the kind of rulebook-burning experience Warzone needs" and added "After becoming exhausted with Call of Duty Warzone’s intricate loadout system, I'm glad its Blackout homage puts the focus back on loot." That framing positions the no-loadout design as the central hook heading into the March 12 launch.

Expect the mode to go live at the announced 9PM PT / 12AM ET window and to start populating Warzone playlists and progression paths tied to Black Ops 7. The downloadable trailer, the named rewards like the Swordfish A1, and the Counter Skies Event Pass dates give players concrete targets to plan for once Avalon opens for business.
