Controlled Burn Planned Feb. 4 in Korbel and Blue Lake, Smoke Possible
Humboldt County Prescribed Burn Association will assist a rancher with a prescribed burn in Korbel and Blue Lake; smoke may be visible from Blue Lake and Highway 299.

The Humboldt County Prescribed Burn Association will assist a local rancher with a targeted broadcast prescribed burn in the Korbel and Blue Lake area on Wednesday, Feb. 4, the association said. "We will be broadcast burning patches of bramble and woody shrubs to maintain open grasslands and increase forage value for livestock and wildlife. Smoke may be visible from Blue Lake and Highway 299," the HCPBA statement quoted by Lost Coast Outpost says.
Organizers emphasize that the operation is part of routine vegetation management and fuels reduction overseen by regional authorities. "All of our burns are carefully conducted by a diverse mix of community members, prescribed fire practitioners, and fire professionals in accordance with CAL FIRE and North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District regulations," Lost Coast reported. Officials also cautioned that "All plans and dates are subject to change or cancellation depending on weather conditions, resource availability, air quality, regional wildfire activity, and other factors."
Local residents should expect visible smoke in some areas and plan accordingly. Earlier prescribed burns in the region have produced noticeable plumes: Prismnews reported that "Green Diamond Resource Company carried out a prescribed burn near the Korbel area on December 11, producing a plume of smoke that was noticeable across multiple communities in northern Humboldt County." That December operation prompted a brief advisory but "did not report injuries or uncontrolled spread, and local officials have not reported any escalations related to the operation since it concluded," Prismnews said.
Green Diamond Resource Company has previously issued its own notices about burns in nearby Bald Mountain and Orick corridors, noting that smoke can be seen from vantage points including Highway 101 near Redwood National Park, Bald Mountain Road near Korbel, and Highway 299 near Blue Lake. One Green Diamond notice read, "Weather conditions permitting, Green Diamond Resource Company plans to conduct prescribed burning for fuel hazard reduction today, January 31, 2025, approximately 8 miles Northeast of the town of Orick and in the Bald Mountain area near the town of Korbel." That company added, "Green Diamond staff will be onsite monitoring prescribed burning and fuels reduction operations."
Public-safety guidance used by land management agencies applies to this work. California State Parks guidance notes that "people traveling near the fire burn areas may see smoke from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the day of the burns," and advises that "In the unlikely event you smell smoke, you are urged to take precautions and use common sense to reduce any harmful health effects by limiting outdoor activities. These precautions are especially important for children, the elderly and people with respiratory and heart conditions." Parks CA also cautions drivers to "use extreme caution while driving near prescribed fire operations due to fire personnel and equipment in the area." The state program added that some prescribed burning "may continue through June 2026," underscoring that prescribed fire is an ongoing management tool.
For Humboldt County the immediate community impacts are local visibility of smoke and temporary air-quality effects, balanced against ranch-level benefits from improved forage and regional gains from reduced fuel loads. Prescribed burning reduces flammable vegetation and can lower the risk of larger wildfires, while requiring coordination with CAL FIRE and the North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District. Residents should expect possible smoke on Feb. 4, limit outdoor activity if sensitive to smoke, and watch for any local advisories or changes.
