Five wounded in Iowa City shooting near University of Iowa campus
Five people were wounded after gunfire broke out during a large fight on Iowa City’s Pedestrian Mall, including three University of Iowa students.

Gunfire erupted on Iowa City’s Pedestrian Mall while officers were responding to a report of a large fight, leaving five people wounded and sending three University of Iowa students to area hospitals. Police said one victim remained in critical condition and four others were stable after the shooting near the 100 block of East College Street just before 1:46 a.m. Sunday.
The Iowa City Police Department said officers heard gunfire as they responded to the scene. By Sunday morning, no arrests had been made, and police said there was no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation continued with support from University of Iowa Police, as authorities worked to sort out how a crowded downtown nightlife corridor turned into a shooting scene in a matter of minutes.
The location sharpened the alarm across campus and the wider community. The Pedestrian Mall is one of Iowa City’s best-known gathering places, lined with restaurants, shops and other businesses and drawing students, residents and visitors into the downtown area late into the night. In a setting built around foot traffic and nightlife, a fight escalating to gunfire exposed the vulnerability of a place many people treat as a routine part of student life.
University officials moved quickly to address the shooting’s impact on campus. University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson said in a message to students, faculty and staff that the university was in close communication with local law enforcement and University of Iowa Police. She urged the community to rely on official university updates and support resources as the school dealt with the aftermath and tried to limit confusion in the hours after the shooting.
The case now raises harder questions about safety in and around the university district, where dense nightlife, heavy pedestrian traffic and a late-night crowd can complicate emergency response. With five people shot, three of them students, the immediate medical crisis was only part of the breakdown. The larger concern is whether the area’s nightlife energy has been matched by enough security, coordination and prevention to keep a fight from becoming a shooting so close to campus.
