Google Expands AI Search With Reddit, Forum Links and Context

Google is putting Reddit threads, social posts and forum posts deeper into Search as it expands AI Mode and AI Overviews with more links and context, a move meant to make results easier to judge before a click. The larger test is trust: once community advice is wrapped inside AI summaries, Google has to distinguish firsthand experience from polished misinformation.

The company said on May 6, 2026 that the update would surface more links from across the web, including expert advice and firsthand perspectives from Reddit, social media and specialized forums. Google also said it would highlight links from users’ news subscriptions. The pitch is simple enough: help people find better websites and original content, while giving them a clearer sense of what a link contains before they open it.

The scale behind the change is significant. Google said AI Overviews are now used by more than a billion people. The feature first launched in the United States in 2024, expanded in 2025 to more than 200 countries and territories and more than 40 languages, and has become one of the company’s most important search products. AI Mode, a more conversational search experience, rolled out in the U.S. in 2025.

But Google’s deeper reach into forum-style content lands after growing concern about quality and accuracy. Critics have said AI Overviews can misread sarcasm or lean on dubious sources. In March 2026, Google removed What People Suggest, a forum-based health feature that summarized Reddit and other community advice for medical queries, after misinformation worries sharpened around the product.

That history matters because Google is now trying to elevate the same kind of lived experience that often makes forums valuable in the first place. A real-world troubleshooting tip, a product review from someone who actually used it, or a niche answer buried in a specialized board can be far more useful than generic search copy. The danger is that AI-generated summaries can flatten context, reward confidence over accuracy and give low-quality or manipulative posts a sheen of authority.

Google has argued that AI search can drive more queries and more links, creating more opportunities for sites to be discovered. For publishers, forums and user-generated platforms like Reddit, that could shift traffic and authority toward places where people already trade practical advice. For Google, the challenge is whether AI search can broaden access to useful expertise without laundering unreliable content into mainstream credibility.
