Google Pixel 10a Ditches Camera Bump, Arrives at $499

Lay almost any flagship smartphone face-down and it wobbles. The $499 Google Pixel 10a sits still.

That single, tactile difference defines Google's sharpest consumer-first design call in years. While Apple extends camera islands across the back of the iPhone and Samsung packs telescoping lenses into its Galaxy A-series midrange phones, Google went the opposite direction with the Pixel 10a: a rear so completely flush it rests level on a table, a nightstand, or a passenger seat without rocking. The Guardian described the back as "completely flat, lacking the protruding camera bump that has plagued almost every handset for decades."

Getting there required trading real hardware for that flat profile. The Pixel 10a carries a 48-megapixel main lens and a 13-megapixel ultrawide but no telephoto, meaning there is no optical zoom above 1x and digital Super Res Zoom extends only to 8x. Samsung's Galaxy A36, a same-tier rival, packs a 4.5x optical telephoto and digital zoom reach to 20x. The Pixel 10a runs Google's Tensor G4 processor, the same chip from the Pixel 9a, rather than the newer G5 found in the rest of the Pixel 10 lineup, which starts at £799. The Guardian's review notes "raw performance short of best" and adds a plastic back and absent Wi-Fi 7 to the list of concessions. CNN reviewer Henry T. Casey wrote that "its shortcomings start to show when you pit it against the competition."

The practical payoffs of the flat design are tangible. Unlike almost every other major smartphone, the Pixel 10a can actually be laid flat on a table and is not prone to knocking around. CNN noted the phone features matte edges and an airy 6.5-ounce body that is marginally lighter than the Pixel 9a. Cases fit without a protruding camera ring to navigate, and the plastic back, while a premium shortfall by reviewer consensus, costs less to repair than the cracked glass on competing handsets.

The Pixel 10a reaches a higher peak brightness than the Pixel 9a on its 6.3-inch OLED screen, making it slightly easier to read outside. The display runs at 120 hertz, with a reported peak brightness of 3,000 nits. The Guardian lists seven years of software updates as a standout strength, one more year than Samsung guarantees with the Galaxy A36. Three camera software features absent from the Pixel 9a arrive with the 10a: Camera Coach, Macro Focus, and Auto Best Take. Video records in 4K and 1080p at 30 and 60 frames per second, with AI-based speech enhancement, noise reduction, and stabilization built in. Leaked specs place battery capacity at 5,100 milliamp-hours.

One number surprises for a $499 phone: the front-facing selfie camera lands at 13 megapixels, a step up in resolution from the Pixel 10 (10.5 megapixels) and Pixel 10 Pro Fold (10 megapixels), though identical to that on the Pixel 9a. The Pixel 10a ships in four colors: Obsidian, Lavender, Berry, and Fog.

Amazon launched the Pixel 10a with a free $100 gift card promotion, effectively pushing the entry cost to $399. The Pixel 9a was available for $400 direct from Google at the time of the 10a's release, which puts the two phones at near-identical effective prices. For anyone already carrying a Pixel 9a, the upgrade math is thin. For everyone else, the Pixel 10a makes a genuinely unusual argument: that a phone's most compelling feature in 2026 might simply be its ability to lie flat.
