The White House Correspondents’ Dinner turned into a security crisis when gunshots rang out just after President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were welcomed to the stage at the Washington Hilton’s International Ballroom. Within seconds, Secret Service agents rushed onto the dais, escorted the president, the first lady and other officials out of the room, and sent more than 2,000 attendees scrambling under tables as the ballroom filled with shouts to get down.

Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, and said he tried to force his way through a security checkpoint outside the ballroom at about 8:36 p.m. Law enforcement said he was carrying a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives. Officials said he exchanged shots with Secret Service agents before being arrested outside the ballroom, never making it inside. A Uniformed Division Secret Service officer was struck during the confrontation, but a bulletproof vest saved the officer’s life.

The breach cut through a tightly choreographed evening that had only just begun. Guests in tuxedos and ballgowns had walked the red carpet at 7 p.m., and by 8:13 p.m. the White House Correspondents’ Association board and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt had taken their places at the head table. JD Vance was introduced at 8:15 p.m., followed a minute later by Trump and Melania Trump as the U.S. Marine Band played “Hail to the Chief.” The Joint Armed Forces Color Guard presented the flag at 8:17 p.m., and Weijia Jiang, president of the association and CBS’s senior White House correspondent, had delivered opening remarks by 8:20 p.m.

The violence raised immediate questions about how Allen got so close to one of Washington’s most heavily secured gatherings. The Washington Hilton has long hosted the dinner in part because of its security-oriented design, including a special presidential entrance and a holding room behind the stage. Authorities said Allen checked into the hotel on Friday, April 24, 2026, and investigators believe he traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago and then to Washington, D.C.

Officials said Allen left behind writings described as a manifesto targeting Trump administration officials. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said investigators believed the suspect was targeting members of the administration, likely including the president. Trump and Melania Trump were safely evacuated, no attendees were seriously injured, and the suspect was taken to a hospital for evaluation after his arrest. A federal court appearance was set for Monday, April 28, 2026, as federal authorities continued to examine a failure that unfolded in full view at one of the capital’s most visible political rituals.
