Hobbyshop Window returns as editors showcase latest model train arrivals
Trains.com revived Hobbyshop Window for the week ending Feb. 27, 2026; recent recaps show Athearn’s upgraded HO 52-foot mill gondola ($34.99 single, $84.99 three-pack) and RailSmith’s N-scale Scout sleeper (two-pack $129).

Trains.com published a Hobbyshop Window entry for the week ending February 27, 2026 and recent recaps at the Model Railroader editorial office list specific incoming products, including Athearn’s upgraded HO 52-foot mill gondola and RailSmith’s newly-tooled N scale 14-section heavyweight sleeper for the Scout, with MSRPs of $34.99 per single Athearn car, $84.99 for a three-pack, and $129 for RailSmith’s two-pack. The Athearn item is cited in the week ending February 20th 2026 recap and the RailSmith sleeper appears in the week ending February 6th 2026 recap.
“Hobbyshop Window is an occasional feature on Trains.com for model railroad operators and builders to see the latest arrivals from the industry’s leading companies,” the site explains, and it repeats the feature’s history: “For many years Hobbyshop Window was a popular department in the pages of Model Railroader magazine. We’re excited to bring it back as an occasional feature on Trains.com.” The Trains.com copy for the week ending Feb. 27, 2026 available to me ends mid-sentence: “…the specific models that editors are e”, the remainder of that post was not present in the supplied text.
Trains.com’s product text for the Athearn gondola lists the decorated schemes and features in full: “This upgraded model from Athearn is decorated for Grand Trunk Western, Burlington Northern, CP Rail, Delaware & Hudson, Denver & Rio Grande Western, and National Railways of Mexico. The HO scale gondola, offered in five road numbers per scheme (two single cars and one three-pack), has improved rivet and bolt detail, corrected wire grab iron placements, new top chord and jack reinforcement pad details, and new uncoupling lever mounting details. Additional features include screw-mounted, roller-bearing trucks; 33" nickel silver wheelsets with RP-25 contours; and body-mounted McHenry scale couplers. Single cars have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $34.99. Three-packs list for $84.99. Athearn Trains, 800-338-4639, athearn.com.”
The RailSmith entry is similarly specific about prototype and hardware: “RailSmith Models has released this newly-tooled car for Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe’s name train the Scout. The N scale sleeper, the manufacturer’s first heavyweight-style car, is based on Pullman plan 3958 and features a detailed interior; separate, factory-applied Scout plaques; screw-mounted three-axle trucks; metal wheelsets; molded underbody details; clear window glazing; and truck-mounted Accumate couplers. The ready-to-run car is sold in a two-pack for $129. RailSmith Models, lowellsmith.net/railsmith/”

A color photo caption that appears with these posts reads verbatim: “Color photo of two HO scale hood units painted orange and black with red and white graphics on scenicked base with a sky blue backdrop.” The source snippets also include teaser headlines with minimal detail, such as “Rapido HO Greenbrier transverse coil car” and “Walthers pauses production of reference book for 2026,” shown as card image caps without expanded copy.
Model Railroader store metadata appears alongside the Hobbyshop Window posts; the January 2026 issue is listed as SKU MRR260101-B at $8.99 with conflicting availability lines showing both InStock and “backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.” The store block also advertises: “Members enjoy 15% off any purchase in our store. Join Today!” and lists buy-more discount codes for back issues (MAGAZINES5, MAGAZINES10, MAGAZINES15).
If manufacturers want items featured, Trains.com provides direct editorial contact: “If you’re a manufacturer and would like to have your items featured in Hobbyshop Window, please email Senior Editor Cody Grivno at cody.grivno@firecrown.com.” Expect more Hobbyshop Window entries as the feature returns to Trains.com; editors are accepting samples and manufacturers can confirm MSRPs, road numbers, and imagery through the contacts provided for Athearn and RailSmith.
