Indonesia’s air force took delivery of six Rafale fighters and a supporting package of aircraft, radar and weapons in Jakarta, a visible step in a modernization drive meant to strengthen deterrence while preserving strategic flexibility. The handover at Halim Perdanakusuma air base also included four Dassault Falcon 8X aircraft, one Airbus A400M MRTT, one Thales GM403 ground-controlled interception radar, Meteor beyond-visual-range missiles and AASM Hammer smart weapons.

The Rafales are part of a 42-jet order sealed in 2022 and valued at $8.1 billion, a purchase that made Indonesia the biggest French arms client in the region. The package also included munitions, submarine development and a satellite-related agreement, widening the deal well beyond combat aircraft and tying Jakarta more deeply to French defense industry partners. Prabowo Subianto framed the handover as part of a larger security calculus, saying, “We must continue to enhance our defence capabilities as a deterrent. We have no interest other than safeguarding our own territory.”

The first three Rafales reached Indonesia on January 23, 2026 and were stationed at Roesmin Nurjadin Air Base in Pekanbaru, Sumatra. The six aircraft delivered on Monday are expected to form the inventory of Skadron Udara 12, giving the Indonesian Air Force a new frontline unit built around French multirole fighters. The ceremony also featured a public blessing ritual, as Prabowo sprayed flowered water on the nose cone of one aircraft, underscoring the political theater that now accompanies the country’s biggest defense purchases.

The accompanying hardware showed how far the modernization effort reaches beyond air combat. The Falcon 8X aircraft are intended for head-of-state transport, while the A400M is meant for heavy-lift tasks such as moving excavators, food, clothes and medical supplies. The separate Thales GM403 radar purchase, part of a 13-unit Ground Control Interception program signed in 2023, is being assembled with help from PT Len Industri, adding a domestic industrial component to the procurement.

Taken together, the delivery points to a middle-power hedge rather than a hard alignment. Indonesia is expanding its deterrence posture, diversifying suppliers and building logistics depth while keeping room to maneuver among major powers. The result is a defense posture designed to project self-reliance, reassure the public and signal that Jakarta intends to answer regional uncertainty with more capability, not with formal bloc politics.
