In Jack Thorne’s first television adaptation of William Golding’s 1954 novel, the boy long known only by a nickname becomes Nicky, a change that puts a sharper spotlight on one of the story’s most vulnerable and intellectually gifted figures.
Golding’s novel, first published in 1954, follows English schoolboys stranded on an isolated island without adult supervision as their attempt at self-government collapses into violence. The book has endured because it is not just a survival tale. Britannica identifies its core tension as civilization versus savagery, alongside a bleak view of humanity’s capacity for evil. That conflict made the novel a landmark, and it also explains why Piggy has remained so central to readers who recognize in him a mind that is careful, rational, and repeatedly ignored.
The 2026 adaptation, a four-part BBC series that premiered in February and streams on Netflix in the United States, is the first episodic version of the novel. Before it, English-language audiences had two major screen interpretations: Peter Brook’s 1963 film and a 1990 Americanized version. Thorne’s decision to name Piggy does not rewrite Golding’s argument, but it does signal how closely modern viewers still track the boy who sees the disaster coming before the others do.
That instinct matters in the national conversation around representation. Audiences often want to find themselves in the stories they watch, and that desire is understandable. Yet Lord of the Flies endures because it asks more than whether a viewer can identify with one boy. It demands attention to the whole social design of the island, where status, fear, and force reshape every relationship. The series’ structure, spread across four episodes, invites that attention by giving individual boys more room, even as the larger descent into disorder remains the point.
A Variety review called the adaptation a harrowing watch, and that description fits a story built to unsettle. IMDb’s episode titled Piggy centers on the character finding something useful to the group and then being hurt when a new friend breaks a promise, a reminder that his isolation is emotional as well as physical. Naming him Nicky may make him easier to remember, but the deeper value of the adaptation is that it pushes viewers past simple identification and back toward the harder work of confronting what Golding wrote on a Pacific island seven decades ago.
