Michelle Nelson launches campaign in Pahrump to unseat Nye County DA
Chief Deputy District Attorney Michelle Nelson announced her run for Nye County district attorney and held a Pahrump kickoff on Thursday, Feb. 5; the race could reshape local law enforcement priorities.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Michelle Nelson announced her candidacy for Nye County District Attorney and held a campaign kickoff in Pahrump on Thursday, Feb. 5. Nelson said her top priority if elected is reinforcing public safety through consistent enforcement of laws and ordinances, a message aimed at voters concerned about crime and local order.
Nelson told the Pahrump Valley Times, "I’m the right candidate for district attorney because I truly believe that I can make the difference." She emphasized continuity of public-safety focus while pitching managerial change at the office. "I have a good job at the district attorney’s office. I truly believe in my heart that I can make the changes and implement the things that need to be done to make this county better," Nelson said after the kickoff.
Nelson has worked at the Nye County District Attorney’s Office for six years and is identified in campaign materials and local reporting as chief deputy district attorney. She highlighted her private-practice background as a reason for shifting office culture, saying, "My career has not been in government office. It’s been in private practice, so I hear and I see things from the outside people’s perspective. I think bringing that fresh perspective, those ideals to the district attorney’s office, to run it like a private practice where the people of Nye County are what’s important, is the path forward."
Nelson has made it clear she hopes to unseat incumbent Nye County District Attorney Brian Kunzi, who has announced he will be seeking reelection. The contest sets up a partisan or independent scrutiny of office priorities, from charging and prosecution practices to enforcement of municipal ordinances in Pahrump and other parts of Nye County.

Public records show Nelson has been active in county business. October 18, 2022 minutes from a county meeting list Michelle Nelson as "Also Present" and record her advising that a drainage-analysis agenda item "was not reviewed by legal although the agenda item form indicated it had been. It would have to be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review as well as what was allegedly approved in December, 2021, to be able to provide a legal opinion." That meeting referenced a proposal from Holistic Engineering and Land Management, Inc. in the amount of $322,000 and recorded that "No action was taken on this item."
For Pahrump residents, the campaign suggests potential changes in how prosecutors balance public-safety enforcement with community concerns. Nelson’s pledge to enforce laws and ordinances consistently will be tested against local priorities such as public-safety resources, prosecution discretion, and collaboration with county law enforcement.
Nelson’s campaign lists michelle@nelson4districtattorney.com and a Facebook page titled "Michelle Nelson for Nye County District Attorney" for contact and information. PVTimes reporter Elijah Dulay covered the kickoff and can be reached at edulay@pvtimes.com. Voters should expect further campaign events, filing deadlines, and comparisons of Nelson’s proposals with Kunzi’s record as the race unfolds.
