Neal Morse Band Featuring Mike Portnoy Releases Fifth Album L.I.F.T.

The Neal Morse Band released L.I.F.T., their fifth studio album, on February 27, 2026, with the record credited to Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy, Randy George, Bill Hubauer and Eric Gillette. The first single, "Fully Alive," arrives with a video directed by Industrialism Films, and prog outlets note the record clocks in as an epic, 71-minute journey.

Neal Morse frames L.I.F.T. plainly: "In short, L.I.F.T. is a prog concept album that follows the journey of someone seeking to belong to something greater than themselves." Century Media adds Morse’s shorthand for the arc: "I would say it’s a spiritual hero’s journey." InsideOut’s product copy lays out the conceptual shape in more detail: "It starts with feeling connected to the world and life, then there is a break in belonging, after which comes the turmoil and desperate cry, leading to a return to that place of profound connection." Randy George says the album title "came late" and that "We thought it could stand for different things" and "It’s kind of whatever the listener wants it to be."

Recording took place under pressure but with clear chemistry. LouderSound reports the sessions were "recorded last April when Portnoy was briefly free," and that the band wrote and recorded L.I.F.T. during a period of major transition and time constraints. The group relocated tracking from Neal Morse’s Nashville, Tennessee home studio to Eric Gillette’s home studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma because Gillette and his wife were expecting a baby. Morse acknowledged the scheduling cloud around Portnoy’s commitments, saying, "Mike got back with Dream Theater and I started praying about what I should do during this period of time." Morse also references work completed in that interval: "But that turned out to be making the Cosmic Cathedral LP 2025’s [Deepwater] and Neal Morse And The Resonance LP 2024’s [No Hill For A Climber], both of which I was really thankful for."

Musically, L.I.F.T. has been presented as a piano-led, vocal-harmony rich record in its lead single. LouderSound describes "Fully Alive" as "piano-led, vocal-harmony rich" and credits it with unlocking the band's creative flow. Prog outlets list additional singles released ahead of the album — Prog Report names "Hurt People" as a second single and "Reaching" as a third. The record is available in multiple formats: Bandcamp offers a 24-bit / 48kHz HD audio master with pre-orders priced at "€10.90 EUR or more" and immediate access to one track; physical options include CD, Black 2LP, Translucent Forest Green 2LP, and a Limited 2CD Digipak. Reviewers are already situating L.I.F.T. alongside the band’s high-water mark. LouderSound says L.I.F.T. "stands toe-to-toe with NMB’s greatest works, like their much-acclaimed concept album Similitude of a Dream," while Century Media notes this is the band’s first album since 2021’s Innocence & Danger and describes the performances as revitalized and unified. Morse also highlighted the group momentum: "When everyone’s on the same page and digging it, things move fast. Between the work of everybody, including Rich, I think we really got there. I think we have something very special here."

The band has signaled plans to bring L.I.F.T. to the stage. "We’ll definitely tour it at some point," Morse says. "It’s too good a record not to, and we’re working it out with Mike." The album was promoted through the band’s official channels and multiple music outlets ahead of the February 27, 2026 release, and high-resolution downloads, physical editions and the "Fully Alive" video are available now.
