Nye County Seeks Residents for Boards Including Tonopah Water Board Vacancy
Nye County seeks applicants for local boards, including a Tonopah Water District Governing Board vacancy; completed applications must arrive by Feb. 17, 2026 at 5 p.m.

Nye County is recruiting residents to serve on a range of local boards and committees, including a vacancy on the Nye County Water District Governing Board for a Tonopah resident in Area 2. The county news post for the Water District vacancy was posted on February 4, 2026 and states the term runs through June 30, 2026. Applications are available at clerk offices or online, and completed forms must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2026; late submissions cannot be accepted.
The county’s posting frames the vacancy as more than a routine appointment: "This is an important opportunity to help shape water policy and planning in our county. If you are committed to responsible resource management and wish to make a meaningful impact, we encourage you to apply." Residents should mail completed applications to the Nye County Clerk’s Office, P.O. Box 1031, Tonopah, NV 89049.
Nye County’s Board Appointment Guidelines outline how applicants move from submission to selection. "It is the intent of this policy to actively involve the members of the various Boards, Commissions and Committees in the decision‐making process," the guidelines state. The Clerk or the responsible department will forward applications to the chairman of the affected board and to the Commissioner who serves as liaison for review, and the chairman is responsible for ensuring copies reach board members. The guidelines note that "Appointment recommendations will be solicited from the Board, Commission or Committee on which the vacancy(ies) exists as well as the liaison Commissioner, if one has been assigned."
The county procedure includes additional review steps. A screening committee appointed by the Commissioners and the County Manager may review candidates, and "Final candidates must appear before the Commissioners for an interview which will be conducted during a public meeting in which such action has been placed on the agenda. The appointment will then be made by a majority of a quorum of the Commissioners present." Town Advisory Boards may also use informal elections to recommend appointments; "Town Advisory Boards conduct informal elections in which the citizens of the community may participate," the policy says.

If no suitable candidates apply, the county retains flexibility to reopen recruitment: "In the event that no suitable candidates have applied, the County reserves the right to re-advertise the vacancy or solicit additional applications." The CivicPlus news item for the Water District also shows prior activity on the page in October 2025, indicating the county maintains a running record of related notices.
For Tonopah residents and others interested in local governance, the immediate steps are clear: obtain an application at a Nye County clerk office or online, complete it and mail to the Clerk’s P.O. Box in Tonopah so it is received by 5 p.m. on Feb. 17, 2026. The process moves quickly from local board review to public interviews before the Board of County Commissioners, and the chosen appointee will serve the remainder of the term through June 30, 2026. This appointment is a local opportunity to influence water policy and resource stewardship at a moment when those decisions matter to households, ranches and businesses across the county.
